Wilkinsburg Elective Office Requirements
Mayor:
to serve as mayor, one must have been a resident of the borough for one
year before the election and be a registered voter of the borough. To
qualify as a voter, a person must be 18 years of age and a resident of
the election district. To continue to serve as mayor, an individual must
retain residence within the borough. The salary is set at five thousand
dollars per year.
Council: Members of borough council serve a four year
term. A candidate must be 18 years of age, registered to vote and a continuous
resident of Wilkinsburg for no less than 1 year. Council members are required
to be residents of the ward from which they are elected. The salary is
set at three thousand three hundred dollars per year. Wilkinsburg has
9 members of council, 3 members representing three Wards. Half the council
is elected every two years, so council members have overlapping terms.
Tax Collector: The Tax Collector of Wilkinsburg serves
a 4 year term, must be 18 years of age, registered to vote and a resident
of Wilkinsburg for at least 1 year. The commission to be paid to the Tax
Collector for the collection of Borough and School (Property) Taxes shall
be as follows: for all taxes collected at discount- a commission of one-half
per centum (0.5%); for all taxes collected at face or when a penalty shall
be added thereto - a commission of two and eight tenths percent (2.8%).
School Director: Wilkinsburg school directors are elected
for four-year overlapping terms occurring in odd-numbered years. Four
directors are elected in one election and five in the subsequent election
two years later. A candidate must be 18 years of age, registered to vote
and a resident of Wilkinsburg for no less than 1 year. Wilkinsburg has
9 School Board Directors elected at large.
District Justice: District Justices serve a 6 year term
with an age limit of 70 years. An eligible candidate must have 1 year
as a Member of the Pennsylvania Bar or shall complete a course of instruction
as provided by law.
Constable: Constables serve a 6 year term. Candidates
must be 18 years of age and a resident of the Borough. Constables are
elected from each ward. Wilkinsburg has three Constables, one for each
Ward.
